Morning in Shetland and a Ferry Ride to Orkney

We woke up this morning in our ginormous suite (seriously, did you see the photos from the last post?), and had the breakfast provided in the fridge (cereals, yogurt, granola bars). We then checked out of the hotel and readied ourselves for another day of driving around beautiful Shetland. We first drove the five minutes back to Scalloway Castle (which we had tried to see yesterday but it was closed), and we're glad we went back for it! It was a small castle, built in 1599, but also really cool, and very much what I think of when I think quintessential "castle".

After the castle, we drove north towards the northernmost part of the main island of Shetland, a direction we hadn't gone yesterday. So, we have ourselves many more gorgeous photos of scenery with which we will now spam you!

Then, we decided it would be fun to drive aaaallllllll the way back down to the southernmost tip of the island (about 1.5 hours drive), Sumburgh Head. It really does feel like standing on the edge of the world.

And of course, Tyler got a little silly...

There were also Puffin nests there, but they did not like the camera! The best picture we could get of one was its back as it popped back into its nest in the side of the cliff.

Then it was time to catch the ferry to Kirkwall, Orkney. And of course, the ferry provided countless shots of beautiful scenery, as well.

And here is our last glimpse of Shetland, which is the very cliff at Sumburgh Head that we had stood on just hours before!

After a five hour cruise (during which the water was very choppy and Morgan got a little green around the gills), we got our first look at Orkney just as the sun was setting.

Tomorrow we have a full day to explore Orkney, and on the docket are St. Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall Castle, Birsay Castle, the Ring of Brodgar, and Skara Brae! So excited!
